Alvin Straight (Richard Farnsworth) learns that his brother Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton) may not have long to live. Alvin has little money, no car, an no driver's license. He does however have a riding lawn mower and heads northeast to Wisconsin, hoping to make it while there's still time. Along the way Alvin makes new friends, and refuses to give up on his journey despite frequent mechanical breakdowns. Richard Farnsworth's final screen performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

John Hurt sensitively plays the title role, based on a true story about a severely deformed man in late 19th century London who becomes the main attraction of a freak show and then the toast of society. Though treated as a sideshow spectacle, he is in fact highly intelligent and sensitive - a fact made public when one Dr. Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins) rescues Merrick from a carnival and brings him to a hospital for analysis. The film received eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.

He brings on the giant man-eating worms that produce the consciousness-altering spice that holds this universe together. Cast includes Kyle Mac Lachlan, José Ferrer, Brad Dourif, Kenneth McMillan, and Sting!!

One almost believes that the answer will lie with the shadowy criminal syndicate that seems to be behind Rita's attempted murder, the near ruination of movie director Adam Kesher (Justin Theroux), and the activities of a hilariously inept hit man who has to keep shooting the witnesses to his bungled handiwork. Lynch earned a Best Director honor at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival.
