Sunday, November 2nd - Tuesday, November 4th The Straight Story (1999) Director: David Lynch Alvin Straight (Richard Farnsworth) learns that his brother Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton) may not have long to live. Alvin has little money, no car, an no driver's license. He does however have a riding lawn mower and heads northeast to Wisconsin, hoping to make it while there's still time. Along the way Alvin makes new friends, and refuses to give up on his journey despite frequent mechanical breakdowns. Sunday, November 9th - Tuesday, November 11th The Elephant Man (1980) Director: David Lynch John Hurt sensitively plays the title role, based on a true story about a severely deformed man in late 19th century London who becomes the main attraction of a freak show and then the toast of society. Though treated as a sideshow spectacle, he is in fact highly intelligent and sensitive - a fact made public when one Dr. Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins) rescues Merrick from a carnival and brings him to a hospital for analysis. Lynch presents a grandiose vision of a galactic system with hordes of characters parcelled out over four planets, and a messiah who is preordained to lead the righteous in a holy war. He brings on the giant man-eating worms that produce the consciousness-altering spice that holds this universe together.
