The Elephant Man (1980)
Director: David Lynch

John Hurt sensitively plays the title role, based on a true story about a severely deformed man in late 19th century London who becomes the main attraction of a freak show and then the toast of society. Though treated as a sideshow spectacle, he is in fact highly intelligent and sensitive - a fact made public when one Dr. Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins) rescues Merrick from a carnival and brings him to a hospital for analysis. The film received eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.

Dune (1980) Cinemascope
Director: David Lynch

Film adaptation of Frank Herbert's popular sci-fi novel set in the year 10,991. Lynch presents a grandiose vision of a galactic system with hordes of characters parcelled out over four planets, and a messiah who is preordained to lead the righteous in a holy war. He brings on the giant man-eating worms that produce the consciousness-altering spice that holds this universe together. Mullholland Drive (2001)
Director: David Lynch

Fresh-faced Betty (Naomi Watts) and beautiful, amnesia-stricken Rita (Laura Elena Harring) embark on their plan to discover Rita's true identity. One almost believes that the answer will lie with the shadowy criminal syndicate that seems to be behind Rita's attempted murder, the near ruination of movie director Adam Kesher (Justin Theroux), and the activities of a hilariously inept hit man who has to keep shooting the witnesses to his bungled handiwork. Lynch earned a Best Director honor at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival.
